Kasaragod, Jul 9: In a tragic incident, a sixth standard student of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Meenchanda, died after a coconut tree inside the school compound uprooted and fell on him while he was playing with other students on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Shijil Ahamed, 11, son of Khaleel Ahamed, hailing from Arakkinar. The accident occurred at around 2 p.m.

Another student, Dixith, was injured in the accident. He is undergoing treatment at a private hospital here. “His condition is reported to be stable. However, we have kept him under observation for the next 48 hours,” hospital sources said.
Shijil, who suffered fatal injuries in the accident, was rushed to a hospital. However, his life could not be saved.
“It was a completely unanticipated tragedy as the coconut palm looked apparently healthy and stable,” said Abdul Jaleel, president, Parents and Teachers Association. In fact, we had cut branches of all the trees on the campus and made it a safe place even before the reopening of the school, he said.
District authorities, including the District Education Officer, Thasildar, and District Collector N. Prasanth rushed to the school.
Minister for Social Justice and Panchayats M.K. Muneer said that a sum of Rs.5 lakh had been sanctioned from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the family of Shijil. A sum of Rs.2 lakh has been sanctioned to the seriously injured student, Mr. Muneer said.
