New Delhi, Feb 11: Siachen soldier Lance Naik Koppad Hanmanthappa, who survived for six days under 35 feet of ice and snow in Siachen, passed away at the Army Hospital today.

The medical condition of Lance Naik deteriorated on Wednesday and he had slipped into comma.

“He continues to remain extremely critical with evidence of oxygen deprivation to the brain on CT scan. There is evidence of pneumonia in both lungs. In addition, multi-organ dysfunction state continues unabated,” stated the evening medical bulletin issued by the Research & Referral (R&R) Hospital where Hanmanthappa is undergoing treatment since Tuesday.

Doctors at the R&R hospital took a second opinion from a team of experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. The senior doctors were in agreement with the ongoing clinical management strategy and concurred with the future plan of management.

Hanmanthappa was pulled out alive from under 35 feet of snow in Siachen glacier on Monday, six days after an Army post guarding the world’s highest helipad was hit by a huge avalanche burying Hanmanthappa and nine other men from 19 Madras regiment. He was flown to Delhi and admitted to the R&R hospital on Tuesday.

“He experienced less oxygen supply to the brain besides hypothermia due to sustained exposure to sub-zero temperature and dehydration. In the absence of food, the metabolic system, too, failed, leading to kidney and liver failure,” William Selvamurthy, former director of Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, Delhi, told Deccan Herald.

Following warming at the hospital, his blood pressure would drop, which the doctors had to manage, Selvamurthy added.

Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh said in a television interview that a day after the avalanche, the Army received a radio contact from the post buried under ice, suggesting that at least one person was alive. The rescue efforts were accelerated following the radio contact.

The Air Force and the Army carried out close to 300 sorties to ferry about 180 men, digging and detection equipment, and two sniffer dogs. It took six days for the men and machine to zero in on the spot and cut through blue ice – harder than concrete – to retrieve Hanmanthappa and nine other men, who perished in the icy heights.

The Dharwad man survived, explained Selvamurthy, possibly because of an air conduit through which he was receiving oxygen. Hanmanthappa did not exert himself and minimised metabolic functions and saved energy. Meanwhile, the mortal remains of other soldiers are stuck in the Siachen base camp as bad weather halted helicopter sorties.

Bengaluru, May 6: Arrested JD-S MLA H.D. Revanna, the son of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda, on Sunday said that there is no evidence against him in the sex video scandal kidnapping case and that it was a "conspiracy" against him.

Talking to the media, while being taken for a medical test before being produced in front of a court here, Revanna stated that a kidnapping case had been lodged against him though he does not have 'one black mark' against him in his entire career of 40 years.

"Without evidence, I have been targeted... All allegations against me are false. My arrest has been made out of ill intention," he claimed.

"The case was lodged on April 28, then, they did not have any evidence. Later, the fake evidence was created on May 2 and I was fixed," he alleged.

Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwara stated on Sunday that a Blue Corner notice has already been issued against Revanna's son and MP Prajwal Revanna, the prime accused in the sex video scandal, as he is believed to be abroad.

"The Interpol will communicate to all nations and he will be located. Once he is located, the SIT will take a call on how he should be secured and brought back to India," he added.

Revanna was arrested on Saturday on charges of kidnapping one of the victims of the sex video scandal.

Parameshwara further maintained that the arrest of Revanna has saddened JD-S leaders and if action was not taken, the SIT would be blamed too.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge refused to comment on the alleged sex video scandal involving Prajwal Revanna.

About Revanna's arrest, he said that the SIT would initiate action as per the law. "Those indulging in such acts must be taught a lesson and justice should be given to the families of victims. No one can escape the law. No one should use this case politically," he stated.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.
