Gulbarga, Feb 1: Congress president Sonia Gandhi Saturday assured people in North Karnataka of a special financial package from the central government for the integrated development of the region.

"I will follow up with the central government the demand of the people in the region to grant a special financial package for their socio-economic development," Gandhi said at a massive public meeting here, about 650km from Bangalore.

Gandhi was responding to the demand voiced by Railways Minister and Gulbarga MP Mallikarjun Kharge for the financial package from the central finance panel on the lines of similar packages granted to Telangana in Andhra Pradesh and Vidharbha in Maharashtra.

The central government has recently granted a special status to the six districts of this backward region - Bidar, Bellary, Gulbarga, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir - by a constitutional amendment to provide the residents reservation in government jobs and educational institutions.

Lauding the people of the region for voting for her party in the May 2013 assembly election, Gandhi said by giving a comfortable majority to the Congress, the people have voted for development, which, she said, suffered during the "corruption-riddled" Bharatiya Janata Party rule.

"By reposing faith in our party, the people have given us an opportunity to fulfill the promises made in the election manifesto through various welfare programmes and schemes aimed at removing the regional imbalance across the state," Gandhi said.

In this context, she referred to the medical education complex of the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), which she inaugurated earlier in the day here.

The huge complex, housing a super-specialty hospital and colleges for medical, dental and nursing courses, was built at a cost of Rs.1,200 crore to provide healthcare needs of the region.

President Pranab Mukherjee laid the complex foundation in May 2010 when he was the finance minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA-2) government.

Terming the special status to the Hyderabad-Karnataka region a historic milestone, Gandhi said it was only the Congress-led UPA government which amended the law after the previous BJP-led NDA government rejected the demand for constitutional intervention.

"In addition to several progressive welfare schemes of the UPA government being implemented in the state, the Congress government has launched the subsidised foodgains scheme (Anna Bhagya) for the poor and free supply of milk thrice in a week to children reading in state-run and aided schools across the state," Gandhi told about 50,000 people who gathered from all the six districts across the region.

Besides Kharge, union ministers from the state - Veerappa Moily, Oscar Fernandes, Rehman Khan and K.H. Muniyappa, party's general secretary Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were present at the occasion.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
