Mangalore, Aug 15: Harish Acharya, a Kannada lecturer at St Raymond's College in Vamanjoor, who had gone absconding after one of his students accused him of sexual harassment last month, has now appeared before.
Sources said that the accused Acharya appeared before the police on Thursday after having secured anticipatory bail from a District Sessions Court.
A PU student had lodged a complaint against Acharya accusing him of sexually harassing her. The complainant claimed that she was made to stand in Acharya's chamber when he misbehaved with her. He had been asking her to “adjust with him” for getting more marks and accused of threatening to give her fewer marks in the examinations if she refused his overtures.
Soon after the complaint, the accused reportedly called a few of his colleagues stating that he was innocent. He then reportedly left the city after switching off his mobile phone. Following the complaint, there were protests in favour and against the student.
On Thursday, Harish Acharya appeared before the Mangalore Rural Police with the order of the Principal District and Sessions Court granting anticipatory bail to him on Wednesday. The court has directed Harish Acharya to appear before the investigating officer and offer cooperation to the police in the case. The court has also directed him not to threaten any of the witnesses.
Harish Acharya appeared before the police along with his advocate. The police complied with the formality of arresting Harish Acharya and then released him on bail as directed by the court. The police have asked him to appear before them at a later date for recording his statement.
