Bengaluru, Oct 16: The craze for selfie claimed the lives of three teenage students as they drowned in Nijagalkere lake on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as Poornachandra (18), Mohammed Murthuza (17) and Shashank K.S. (17).
They were among 51 students and seven teachers of Siddaganga Pre-University College in Tumakuru district who had come to Dobbespet to take part in the National Service Scheme (NSS) camp for service.
Three students went to the Siddheshwara shrine. They later went to see the nearby lake there and could not resist the temptation to click a selfie.
As Poornachandra stood on a moss covered boulder to pose for selfie, he slipped and got caught in the lake silt. Murthuza and Shashank tried to rescue him, but they too drowned.
The locals alerted the fire brigade and rushed to their help, but could not trace them. The Nelamanagal fire station staff took over two-and-a-half hours to fish out the bodies. The bodies were shifted to the Nelamangala Government Hospital for the post-mortem and then handed over to the parents.
