Mangalore, Jun 11: Endo Virodhi Horata Samiti has alleged that the health and family welfare department had been submitting inaccurate and false information to the High Court of Karnataka pertaining to the number of Endosulfan affected victims in Dakshina Kannada district and facilities being provided to them by the department, thus making it difficult for the affected victims to survive.
Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, president of the Samiti K Shridhar Gowda said that the health department on March 1 had given assurances of providing free treatment to the Endosulfan affected persons and smart cards to facilitate the treatment. However, only a fraction of the affected individuals were given smart cards and moreover, no arrangements were made to provide this treatment to the victims in private hospitals, he said.
He also alleged that the health department had submitted inaccurate information to the high court with regard to the number of pregnant women hailing from Endosulfan areas in the district who had undergone ultrasound scanning. The principal secretary of health had claimed in court that a total of 35,000 pregnant women in the state had undergone ultrasound scanning between December 2013 and April 2014. However, the Dakshina Kannada district health department had said that it had scanned close to 1,660 pregnant women so far, he said, adding that the figures submitted to the court raised serious doubts about the credibility of the health department.
He said that after the announcement of mobile health clinics by the health department, the Endosulfan victims were visited once by a team of doctors in April assuring medicines for the mentally challenged individuals. However, there was no follow up by the team of doctors, who did not visit for a second time, he said, adding that the department was trying to oppress the Endosulfan victims in the district.
There have also been attempts to create fear in the minds of the victims about rehabilitation centres for the victims, he added.
He said that with the health department neglecting the needs of the Endosulfan victims, committing suicide by the victims was inevitable under such circumstances.
