Mangaluru, May 31: Along the lines of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) – which strives to create a safe environment along the beaches of Australia particularly as a rescue organisation, there is a proposal to launch a similar non-profit organisation in Mangaluru.
If the proposed chapter of Surf Life Saving India gets underway, India will have the opportunity to participate in the World Surfing Championship in 2016, said Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project CEO Yathish Baikampady.

Although a national surfing open championship was scheduled to be held on May 29-31 in Panambur Beach, the championship was postponed to a later date in view of gram panchayat elections. However, an interaction and training session was held at Panambur on Saturday by an expert certified trainer Jamo Borthwick from International Surfing Association – which is the world governing authority for surfing.
Interacting with presspersons on the occasion, Mr Baikampady said that if the Surf Life Saving India was launched in Mangaluru, it would encourage lifesaving activities along the coastline of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, along with giving a boost to water sports. The not-for-profit organisation would be affiliated to Surfing Federation of India (SFI) which is the national governing body for surfing in India, he said.
Jamo Borthwick expressed hope that water sports such as surfing would be envisaged along the coastline of the district if an organisation such as Surf Life Saving would start operating in the beaches of the coastal city by providing training and scope for lifesaving activities on the beaches.
SFI vice-president Rammohan Perampaje said that lifeguards were essential on the beach, who could gauge the roughness and depth of the sea near the shore. They are trained to engage in lifesaving activities and rescue drowning persons. Surf Life Saving India will spread awareness and provide training for swimmers and volunteers in this regard, he said, adding that plans were on the anvil to conduct certification workshops on rescue operations and lifesaving activities along the entire coast.
The national surfing championship is believed to have been postponed to October. Nevertheless, surfing training and practice is ongoing by enthusiasts at Panambur beach.
