Mangaluru, May 5: A team of experts from Berlin will conduct a research on malaria in the coastal city of Mangaluru, revealed Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader
Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, Mr Khader said that a team from Institute of Tropical Medicine and International Health from Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, had arrived to conduct a research on the reasons for the growth of malaria specifically in Mangaluru.
One of the team members Prof Dr Frank Mockenhaupt said that the team would conduct a research on the risk factors for malaria among the people of Mangaluru.
It is a joint effort by the team and concerned health officials in the district to determine the causes of widespread malaria in the city and the possibility of a genetic trait that makes people in Mangaluru more susceptible to the disease, he said.
He said that the research was aimed at reducing the spread of malaria in the region. During a similar research in countries such as Ghana, Rwanda and Uganda in sub-Saharan Africa, it was found that 25 percent of people were susceptible to malaria due to a genetic trait, he told reporters.
Mr Khader said that the research would begin in a couple of weeks and would be conducted during a period of five months, after which the findings would be submitted in a report in approximately six months' time.
Two other team members Prabhanjan Gai and Konrad Sicgert were present on the occasion.
