Kannur, Sep 4: Tension prevailed in Thillankery and surrounding areas of the district on Sunday following the murder of a RSS worker M Vineesh (25) by an unidentified gang at of Pullipyilil on Saturday night. To protest against the murder, the BJP has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the district. However, vehicles and essential services have been spared. The CPM has also called for hartal in Thillankery alleging bomb attack on the vehicle of DYFI local leader Jijesh (28) of Kunderingal the same night.

While the BJP-RSS alleged it was the CPM workers who killed the RSS worker, the CPM refuted the allegations and said it was the BJP workers who hurled bombs at the vehicle of the CPM workers. The body of Vineesh was spotted by the local residents with his leg cut off and also with serious injuries to the head, on a mud path near the panchayat office in Thillankery around 9 pm. By the time the body was taken to the hospital, he was declared brought dead.
Amidst the allegation and counter allegation, the post-mortem of Vineesh's body would be conducted at Pariyaram Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Sunday afternoon and it would be cremated in this evening. Police suspect that the attack on the CPM worker and the murder of the RSS worker are mutually related and the murder is an act of retaliation. Ever since the Sreekrishna Jayanthi celebrations, tension has been prevailing in the locality and the gory development of Saturday is believed to be the culmination of the same. In wake of the tense situation, large numbers of policed personnel have been deployed in the area, and situation is now under control, said police.
