Mysuru, Dec 27: A mob of over 50 persons descended on Hunsur MLA H.P Manjunath’s farmhouse on the outskirts of the town late on Friday night, smashed window panes and damaged cars parked on the premises.
The incident occurred hours after a group clash in the town over the celebration of Hanuma Vrata and Eid Milad.
Though the MLA was not in the house when the mob came there, 10 people in the house, including his brother Amarnath and his friends, locked themselves inside, said Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare. The mob fled as soon as the police reached the spot, he added.
“It is a fallout of the communal tension in the town,” Mr. Khare said, ruling out political rivalry. The police, however, were making all efforts to trace the culprits.
Though the town remained tense even on Saturday, Mr. Khare said the situation was under control. Three persons had been taken into custody in connection with the communal trouble.
Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr. PC., which had been imposed on Friday, remained in force even on Saturday with the police placing curbs on movement of people inside the town.
Trouble broke out on Thursday over differences between two communities over display of flags in public places, forcing police to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the mobs.
The situation worsened on Friday when a carpenter, Mahadeva, was attacked by a group on Friday. Soon, all business establishments in the town closed down while the district administration cancelled the Eid Milad procession scheduled for Thursday, and imposed prohibitory orders.
