Tiruchi, Jul 27: A suspected terrorist was finally arrested by police for sending a letter threatening to carry out bomb blasts at famous temple and a government hospital in Srirangam in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The letter sent Muruganandham a few months ago had created widespread panic in Tamil Nadu. Sustained probe and matching of hand writings of various persons eventually led the investigators in zeroing in on the “author” of the threat letters.
The Srirangam police launched a probe upon receiving complaints following anonymous hand written threat letters that were sent to the Srirangam temple and Srirangam government hospital threatening that bombs would go off.
The threat letters were sent in the name of photo studios at different places and bearing some names apparently to fix those persons.
Similar bomb threat letters were addressed to different railway station masters thereafter with the Government Railway Police registering separate cases in this regard.
Police sources said as part of probe the Srirangam police enquired with photo studio association members who feigned ignorance.
The hand writing of the members were subsequently taken and sent to the Regional Forensic Laboratory at Madurai for examination by hand writing experts by matching them with the hand written threat letters.
The sources said the hand writing of Muruganandham matched nearly 80 per cent with the threat letters as concluded by the experts.
The police seized diaries and other written documents from Muruganandham whose handwriting was once again taken.
The sample handwriting along with the other written documents and the threat letters were sent to the experts for examination.
A senior officer said the experts’ conclusion was that the threat letters were written by the same person. Based on that, Muruganandham was inquired and he reportedly admitted to have written them.
The sources said Muruganandham had written the threat letters after he was allegedly not treated properly by the police after he was arrested in a hurt case booked by the Lalgudi police station in 2008.
