Mangaluru, Jan 22: With several proposals having been submitted to the state police department on implementation of tools such as CCTV cameras and traffic signals at various traffic junctions, efforts are being made to upgrade Mangaluru into a ‘safe’ city,” said Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan.
Speaking at the inaugural programme of 26th Road Safety Week organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration, transport department and police department on Thursday in Mangaluru, he said that the reason for the highest number of deaths in India was road accidents. Strangely, the situation has become such that road accidents have become a daily occurrence in the country, while road safety has been pushed to the sidelines. However, road safety is the responsibility of every citizen, even in small matters, he urged.
DK Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that public involvement with respect to following road safety and traffic rules was very poor in Mangaluru city. Lessons on most civic problems including road safety should be implemented in textbooks for primary classes to spread awareness among young students, he said, adding that violators of traffic laws could be made to undergo corrective classes regarding traffic management rather than penalty, to make them more aware of the dangers of violating traffic rules.
In his inaugural address, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank S R Bansal said that children were the best teachers who could teach the elders at home on following road safety and traffic rules. Students should take up the crusade of spreading awareness to others and help promote road safety, he appealed.
Six citizens from the district namely, Hasanabba, Sahan Banu, J Abdul Raouf, Nelson Pereira and Velmurugan were felicitated in the programme for their selfless deeds towards accident victims and promoting road safety.
DK Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa and Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo also spoke during the programme.
On the occasion, pamphlets were released on information regarding traffic and road safety rules. Leaflets providing information and urging road safety were released, to be distributed to people.
Prior to the inaugural programme, an awareness jatha on road safety was held in the city in which children from various schools participated.
