Bantwal, Sep 4: Unidentified thieves decamped with gold ornaments worth several lakh rupees and cash from a beedi merchant's house at Guddeyangadi near Panemangaluru in Bantwal taluk.

The incident occurred during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when there was no one at the house as all the family members had gone to a relative's house in a nearby village.
Mohammed Ismaeel, the house owner, told police that he and family members returned on Sunday afternoon and came to know that his house was burgled.
Upon checking, the family found that gold jewellery weighing 43 sovereigns and Rs 40,000 in cash were missing from the locker of almirah.
Ismaeel had kept the keys of the almirah under the bed. The thieves had managed to find the keys after gaining entry into the house by breaking the tiles of roof from backside.
Sub-inspector Gangadharaiah attached to Bantwal town police station visited the spot along with his team. Finger print experts and dog squad were also pressed into service. Investigations are on.
