Thieves hijack car in Uppinangady; One arrested

Mangalore, Feb 20: In a strange case, a youth was caught by the local youth while attempting to hijack a car with a large amount of cash in it, near Dharmasthala in Uppinangadi limits on Wednesday.

While attempting to hijack a Toyota Innova belonging to Manohar from Tumkur, which had Rs 4 lakh in cash, one of the culprits was caught by the local youth and handed over to the police.

The incident occurred when owner of the car Manohar and gone to take a holy dip in Nethravathi river at Dharmasthala along with four fellow pilgrims.

The culprits allegedly stole the car key from the pocket of Manohar's pant which he had left behind in the car. The culprits got away with car after pulling off the hijack, but one of them was caught by local Muslim youth who had followed the Innova from Dharmasthala to Kokkada.

Sunil from Koramangala is the nabbed culprit, who was handed over to Belthangady police along with the car. The cash was also handed to the police.

The youth Ashraf, Siddik, Badruddin, Abbas and Nizamuddin helped in catching the thief. The two other culprits fled from the scene before they could be caught.

It is learnt that Belthangady police staff had also followed the thieves upon learning of the incident.
