Thirthahalli, Dec 13: The town, still recovering from the death of 14-year-old girl Nanditha K?B, is tense again after a fire gutted the grocery shop owned by her father, T G Krishnappa, in the early hours of Friday.

According to local residents, the incident took place at around 2.30 am. Noticing flames, they informed Krishnappa and tried to douse the fire. However, grocery items worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed. The fire started at the back of the shop, while the front door remained intact. The Thirthahalli police have registered a case.

The fire incident comes close on the heels of the CID submitting an interim report stating that Nanditha committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance, unable to cope with English medium education. She was a class 8 student at the government high school in the town. Her father had lodged a complaint alleging abduction, molestation and murder on October 31. But the police ruled out all these allegations.

Superintendent of Police Kaushlendra Kumar visited the shop at 5 am on Friday. He said, œThe investigation is on and two teams have been formed to nab those responsible. Nobody has been arrested so far. Security has been beefed up in the town.

With regard to the fire, he said, œShort circuit is not the cause at all. It seems like some miscreants have done this deliberately. We will find out the truth shortly.

As news of the fire spread, a crowd gathered at the shop. Heated arguments were exchanged between Irfan, who was interrogated in the Nanditha case, and Krishnappa. It is said that they manhandled each other. The police brought the situation under control. Both families have lodged police complaints against each other.

Krishnappa said that he has failed to get justice in the case relating to his daughter's death. œThose who killed my daughter are being protected. I will meet the chief minister, seeking justice, soon.

Incident echoes in Council In the Legislative Council in Belagavi, BJP members demanded that the police give protection to the parents of Nanditha.

Krishna Bhat and Ganesh Karnik raised the issue on Friday. They said that the police had failed to give adequate protection to the victim's family. The shop owned by the girl's father was set on fire and the family has lost its source of livelihood, they said. They demanded that the Nanditha murder case be handed over to the CBI for a probe.

Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said Home Minister K J George would give a reply in the House on the matter.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
