Riyadh, Dec 20: Three expatriate workers including one from NR Pura of Chikmagalur district died after breathing toxic gases from a coal-burning heater in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently.

Mohammad Basheer (31), son of Fareed and Nafeesa couple, residents of Guddehalla in NR Pura in Chickmagalur district of Karnataka is one among the three deceased.

Basheer had come to Saudi with dreams of knitting a better future just a month ago. He was employed as a diesel mechanic in a company named Imaan Co at Ha'il, near Riyadh, the capital of the Kingdom.

The company had given him accommodation and he was sharing the room with two of his Srilankan colleagues.

On last Sunday, since the temperature was dropping drastically the trio switched on the heater, which emitted toxic gases from the heater's smouldering coal. Basheer and one of the Sri Lankan died on the spot after inhaling the toxic fumes. The other Sri Lankan who was severely injured died on Wednesday.

The men were sleeping in a tightly shut room in a building close to the Jarallah Market in Ha'il, the capital of Ha'il province.

Civil defence personnel said severe cold in the region drives poor people to use cheap and often risky methods to keep themselves warm.

Wait continues

The grieving family of Basheer is still waiting to see him for the one last time as the dead body has not yet been sent to his native place.

Though the family members have sought help from Sringeri MLA D N Jeevaraj and from MP Jayaprakash Hegde, it has not yielded any fruits. However, the agent through whom Basheer had gone to Saudi is helping the family.

Pillar of family

Basheer, son of Fareed and Nafeesa couple was the eldest of three siblings. His brother is pursuing MBA degree while he has a sister too to take care of. Basheer's father is a daily wage worker. With wife, three children and mother to take care of all the hopes of the family were pinned on Basheer, the bread winner of the family.

Having studied only till SSLC, Basheer managed to get a good job because of his talent and experience.

Fareed, despite all the difficulties had taken Rs 2 lac loan to send his son to Saudi so that the fortune of the family could change.

However, nothing is going to change barring the fact that the pillar of the family has collapsed and will never return. While the family fights back tears of losing the dear one, Fareed now has to think of means to earn that Rs 2 lac to repay the loan.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.
