Mangaluru, Mar 24: Four years after they were arrested by the police in connection with the murder case of Bajrang Dal activist Rajesh Poojary at Kalpane in Bantwal taluk, a local court has exonerated the three Muslim youths.
Irshad (23), Imran (21) and Husain (23), residents of Malluru village, who had spent several days in police custody and judicial custody, were acquitted by the district sessions court, which found no evidence against them in the case.
On the morning of March 18, 2014, Rajesh Poojary, who was an auto rickshaw driver was hacked to death at Kalpane in Bantwal taluk. The police arrested the three youths with the allegation that they were “paid” to kill him.
The arrests had led to a series of protests claiming the three were innocent and were being “fixed” by the police.
The family members of the three arrested youth in connection with this case had staged a series of protest in Mangalore and Bantwal under the banner of Democratic Youth Federation of India. They had even tried to lay siege to the house of District-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai.
Bowing down to the pressure, in July 2014, the police department had entrusted the case to Crime Investigation Department (CID), which reinvestigated the case.
