Kasargod, Oct 6: Amid reports of widespread destruction of standing crops in hamlets bordering forests, the carcass of a three-year-old tusker was found at Kottamkuzhi in Karadukka panchayat in the district on Sunday.

The officials who carried out preliminary inspection did not find any injury marks on the carcass and cause of the death would be known only after post-mortem on Monday, Forest department sources here said.
The unnatural death of the wild elephant comes amid complaints of widespread destruction of standing crops by elephant herds in select localities which included Adur, Pandi, Balavandka, Karadukka, Parappa, Neyangayam and Panoor. The district administration had requisitioned services of the Rapid Response Team but failed to ward off threat from the herds.
A team of officials led by District Collector P.S. Muhammed Sagir had recently visited the affected areas to assess the extent of damage caused by the wild elephant attacks on standing crops including plantain and arecanuts.
