Bantwal, Sep 26: In a tragic and unfortunate accident, a 11-year-old boy lost his arm, when a huge branch of the Peepal tree in the premises of the school he was studying in, broke and fell on him on Thursday.

Hasanabba, a student of Nettarakere government school in Thumbay gram panchayat limits in Bantwal taluk, lost his entire right arm in the mishap.

The tragedy occurred when students of the school were studying for their examinations under the tree after their midday-meals.

Although Hasanabba was immediately rushed to the hospital, his arm was completely broken and could not be saved. Fellow mates of Hasanabba, Yatish and Naseema were injured in the same mishap.

What really happened?

A huge branch of the peepal tree near the school building gave way without warning and fell down heavily on the children seated below. Although most children managed to escape away from the vicinity of the tree, three children were caught unaware as the branch fell on them.

Due to the force of the falling branch, the compound wall close to the tree broke under the branch, along with the embankment built around the peepal tree. Minor damages were caused to two houses situated in the vicinity of the tree.

Naseema received minor injuries to her head, while Yatish suffered injuries on his back. Both were immediately taken by locals to the hospital.

Hasanabba, who was trapped right beneath the huge limb, went unnoticed for a while. After he was later discovered by people, he was rushed to a private hospital in Thumbe.

He was later taken to a hospital in Mangalore, where, after examination and consultation, the doctors decided to amputate the boy's right arm.

Family in a disheartened state

Hailing from a very poor family, Hasanabba is the only son of Abdul Latheef and Mumtaz. Abdul Latheef earns his living as a coolie, while Mumtaz is a beedi-worker.

Hasanabba, who was good in his studies, had also a talent in painting. Now, his family bemoans the loss of his limb, which will render him handicapped henceforth. Abdul Latheef is also fraught with worry as he is in no condition to repay the hospital bill.

District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai and health minister U T Khader have assured necessary financial help from the government. Former zilla panchayat member Ummar Farooq, Thumbe gram panchayat president Mohammed Valavoor, former taluk panchayat member Purusha Salian and others offered their condolences to the family.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
