Mangaluru, Oct 4: Moderate to heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning lashed Mangaluru and other parts of coastal Karnataka on Thursday.
Heavy thunderbolts created fear among residents while rain threw the normal life out of gear in Mangaluru and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, IMD Bengaluru Director-in-charge C P Patil said South interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala would receive moderate to heavy rainfall measuring 6-7 cms for the next 4-5 days.
He said that there was circulation over Lakshwadeep and Maldives in the East Arabian Sea.
A low-pressure area was likely to form in the next 24 hours, and that would cause a depression in the next 36 hours.
The system would move in the North West direction to intensify to form a cyclone. It would then move towards the Oman coast, Patil explained.
IMD had also issued a warning to fishermen, asking them not to venture out into the sea. An alert had been called for Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
