The accused have been identified as Mahesh Kumar (35), from Akash Bhavan, Latheesh (23), from Kavoor, Satish Acharya (42), from Bantwal and Kamalaksha Poojary (42), from Bantwal.

Speaking at a press conference, Police Commissioner S Murugan said that the accused Mahesh Kumar and Latheesh were found to have supplied weapons, including a dagger and knives, to under-trials inside the jail. The two arrived outside the jail in a motorbike on October 31 two days prior to the murders and Mahesh Kumar slipped the weapons over the boundary wall, presumably by scaling the tree beside the wall, he said.

He said that a dagger and knives had been found inside the jail premises as murder weapons. The knives had been manufactured by accused Satish Acharya, who makes knives by profession, on the request of other accused Kamalaksha, who handed over the weapons to Mahesh Kumar. Both Mahesh Kumar and Kamalaksha are offenders with previous cases against them. The accused Kamalaksha had a case of murder against him, informed Mr Murugan.

Based on new facts that have come to light, the investigating police have registered two separate cases of murder of undertrials Madoor Isubu and Ganesh Poojary. During the course of investigation, it was ascertained that the murder of Isubu had been preplanned while the murder of Ganesh Poojary happened on the spur of the moment. The initial murder of Isubu was committed by a gang of undertrials after they escaped from the quarantine block, whereas it was a mob of inmates which killed Ganesh Poojary, he informed media persons.

In connection with the murder of Bajrang Dal activist Prashanth Poojary in Moodbidri, five persons have been arrested so far, out of seven main accused who perpetrated the crime, he informed.
