Udupi, Jan 1: A group of people who were travelling from Mangaluru to Goa allegedly vandalised a petrol bunk at Kota on NH 17 in Udupi district on Tuesday night over a minor scuffle with the staff working at the pump.
The Kota police said that a group of 30 persons stopped at the petrol pump at Kota at around 8.30 p.m., alighted from their tourist bus and used the toilet maintained by the pump several times, to which the staff working at the pump objected. Enraged by this, few members of the group allegedly assaulted the staff members and threatened to burn down the entire pump.
Staff members Santhosh and Prashanth are said to have been injured in the assault and were admitted to a private hospital in Kundapur.
As soon as the news about the fight spread in the town, a large number of locals gathered at the scene and expressed their anger by besieging the tourist bus, refusing to allow the group of tourists to drive away.
Soon after, the police arrived at the scene and resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the large crowd that had gathered there. As the situation threatened to become worse, the police also called in a unit of Rapid Action Force to control the situation.
Thereafter, the group of tourists was led to Kota police station under the protection of the police personnel. Six persons from the group of tourists Dilshan, Silvester Lobo, Melwin, Snehal, Sunil D'Souza and Alvin D'Souza were booked for assault and vandalism. A case was registered at Kota police station.
Taluk panchayat member Raghavendra Kanchan and gram panchayat members arrived at the police station and tried to pacify the locals.
Condemning the incident, petrol pump owner Anand said that such kind of incidents would lower the morale of the staff working in petrol pumps who strive day and night for the convenience of the people.
