Traffic warden squad launched in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Oct 2: ‘Traffic Warden Squad’, a team that will assist police in regulating traffic, was inaugurated, at the police commissioner’s office here on Friday.

City Police Commissioner S Murugan said that the concept is not new and is already operational in Bengaluru and Mysuru. The service has been introduced in Mangaluru looking at its success.

“The public should cooperate with the police in maintaining discipline in the society,” he called upon.

The 94-year-old Joe Gonsalves who had volunteered to take charge as the head of the Squad said, there has been a sharp increase in the number of accidents in the city.

“It was a pleasure to drive on Mangaluru road in the past. Now the scenario has changed,” he added.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Uday Nayak stating that 23 traffic wardens have now joined the squad, said those who are interested to join are welcome. However there are certain criteria like, those who want to be the part of the team should not be involved in any criminal activities and if students, they should get permission from their parents.

The Traffic Warden Squad which will work in coordination with the police department will provide manpower in managing the traffic in the city and will organise road safety and traffic awareness campaigns in association with the Police Department for motorists, pedestrians and schoolchildren. The squad will also assist the traffic police in regulating traffic. The squad will also report traffic violations to the police and will assist them in organising special drives. The squad comprises a Chief Warden, four deputy chief wardens and 23 members in the Junior Sqaud comprising students of St Agnes, St Joseph’s (Jeppu), Milagres and other colleges.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Shantharaju administered an oath to the traffic wardens. Identity cards and certificates were distributed on the occasion.

A rally was flagged off by the Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza at Hampankatta signal prior to the inauguration of the formal function.

Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in a few districts of Karnataka and said Bengaluru is likely to witness light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 30 degree Celsius to 22 degree Celsius in the next 24 hours.

Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamrajanagara, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfalls between May 17 and 21, said C S Patil, Director of Meteorological Centre, India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru.

According to India Meteorological Department, some places in Kodagu, Hassan, Mysuru, Mandya and Tumukuru districts will also witness, gusty winds (40-50 kmph) on May 18.

Moderate rain and thundershowers are also likely in Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Ramanagara and Vijayanagara districts.

IMD also predicts light to moderate rain very likely at some places over Bagalkote, Belagavi, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburgi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir districts.

On May 16, Channagiri in Davanagere district received the highest rainfall of 6 cm.

Mangaluru, May 6: A five-year-old girl from Arendur village of Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) recently.

As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, where she failed to respond to the treatment and died on Friday night.

It is learned that the KFD is slowly spreading to the newer areas of coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

Mangaluru: A teenage boy from a remote village in Dakshina Kannada district, who was undergoing treatment for stomach pain for past few days, breathed his last after hospitalization. 

The deceased has been identified as Nithin Kumar, 19, who had completed PUC and was attending computer classes. 

According to police, on May 4, when he informed his family that he had been suffering from a stomach-ache for the past 4-5 days, his family members took him to a clinic in Kaniyoor.

The doctors who examined him advised him to undergo scanning. He was informed about a kidney stone and later, they returned home. That same night, he suffered from stomach-ache again and was rushed to a private hospital in Puttur.

On May 7, as per doctors’ advice, he was discharged around 12:45pm. However, when he came home around 2:30pm, he again suffered from stomach-ache and was taken to another private hospital in Puttur, where doctors conducted a surgery.

On Wednesday, as per doctors’ advice, he was asked to be shifted to Mangaluru for better treatment.

He visited a private hospital in Derakatte, where doctors suggested that he be shifted to government Wenlock Hospital.

The doctors who examined him at the Wenlock Hospital declared him dead. A case has been registered at the Bellare police station, and an investigation is on.
