Kasaragod, Nov 29: Returning to his workplace after a one-and-half month vacation, an Indian expatriate worker from Kerala has now been lodged in a Kuwait jail on charges of drug trafficking.
According to his relatives, Kabeer was tricked into carrying the drugs by one of his friends in Kuwait, a native of Ponjassery near here.
His wife, Sajida Kabeer, has now approached Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and the NORKA-Roots, seeking their intervention into the issue.
“A couple of days before leaving for Kuwait last week, Kabeer got a call from his friend in Kuwait requesting him to bring a parcel from his home. Kabeer agreed but made the mistake of not checking the parcel when it arrived—just a couple of hours before he was about to catch his flight,” said E.K. Usman, one of Kabeer’s relatives.
It was a common friend of the duo who delivered the package. Instead of handing it over to Kabeer, the friend replaced it with another packet carrying the drugs and gave it to Kabeer through his mother, Usman alleged.
“As he was in a hurry to leave, Kabeer or his wife did not have the time to open the packet. They just placed it inside a bag and left for the airport,” he added. As soon as he was apprehended at the airport, Kabeer contacted his wife Sajitha over phone and alerted her.
The Perumbavur police, meanwhile, have registered an FIR based on a complaint by Kabeer’s relatives and confirmed that both the friends had been absconding.
“Initial investigations have verified the complaint as genuine. It will be taken up with the Kuwait police through the Indian embassy there,” said Muhammad Riaz, circle inspector, Perumbavur.
