Mangaluru, Aug 7: Around 180 passengers on-board a UAE-bound Air India Express flight had spent almost five hours in the air after it returned back to Mangaluru International Airport on the day the Thiruvananthapuram-Dubai flight crash landed at Dubai, official sources said.

The flight, which also had six crew members, took off from MIA at around 8.20pm to Dubai. When the flight which reached somewhere near Mumbai after 45 minutes, it received an emergency message from Sharajah Airport that since there is lot of air traffic and non-availability of slot, the flight should return to Mangaluru.
However, when the flight reached Mangaluru, there was no visibility on the runway due to bad weather, so, the pilot decided to delay landing. After sometime, when the weather was still not conducive to land, authorities requested Calicut International Airport to allow the flight to land there.
The flight made a landing at Calicut around midnight. The aircraft finally returned to Mangaluru Airport at 2.05am on Friday, with passengers spending over five hours in air and an hour at Calicut Airport.
The stranded passengers were accommodated on alternative flights which fly to Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi. The remaining 60 passengers flew on Sunday in AIE at 3am to Dubai, said Mr Nagesh.
