New Delhi, Sep 9: Six districts of Karnataka are among the 75 adjudged cleanest in the country, according to a recent survey by the Centre.

Udupi, Kodagu, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagaram, Mandya and Gadag were among the 75 districts performing well in implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural). The result of the survey was on Thursday released by the union ministry of drinking water and sanitation, which oversees implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet project.
No district in Karnataka could find a place among the top five cleanest districts in the plains. Among the 53 districts in the plains, Udupi ranked seventh with 91% score, while Kodagu and Bengaluru Rural secured 11th and 17th ranks with 88% and 84.4% score, respectively. Ramanagaram and Mandya had 23rd and 26th positions with 80.9% and 79.8% score, respectively, while Gadag came 50th with 64.7% score.
Sindhudurg in Maharashtra and Nadia in West Bengal ranked first and second in the list of the cleanest districts in the plains. Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and West Sikkim in Sikkim were adjudged cleanest among 22 districts in the North-East and special category states.
“Many states and districts are marching ahead towards the goal of Swachh Bharat since the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural). It is appropriate that the outcomes relating to cleanliness are measured and states and districts are ranked to instil competitiveness among them,” Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation, said. He said that the government was keen to take the Swachh Bharat Mission beyond just declaring a village open defecation-free.
Karnataka ranked 18th among the states in the cleanliness index, according to the findings of the National Sample Survey Organisation released on Thursday. Sikkim, Kerala and Mizoram secured the first, second and third ranks, respectively.
