Udupi, Jan 28: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party, which had faced rebellion in recent MLC polls, are now giving final touches to their lists of candidates for looming zilla and taluk panchayat polls.

T.V. Hegde, president of the district unit of the BJP, said that the list of candidates for ZP had been sent to the State unit. The candidates for the three taluk panchayats were being selected.
“We hope to announce the candidates for both the ZP and three taluk panchayats in the next three days,” he said.
“We have given a clean and transparent administration. There has been no corruption and we have distributed funds properly in the Udupi ZP. This will help us,” he said. “We will highlight the withdrawal of below the poverty line (BPL) cards to poor beneficiaries and the inaction of the State government on the ‘kumki’ land issue in our campaign,” he added.
The BJP does not expect any problem from the Independent MLA from Kundapur H. Srinivas Shetty in the forthcoming elections. “Mr. Shetty’s admirers are with us,” Mr. Hegde said.
The Congress too is finalising its candidates. “The ZP candidates will be cleared by the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) by February 1,” said KPCC Secretary M.A. Gafoor.
“We will be banking on the State government’s programmes such as Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya, besides support to fisheries sector and rural development in our campaign,” B. Narasimhamurthy, general secretary of District Congress Committee.
