Udupi, Dec 18: Despite a stay order, the controversial ritual of ‘made snana’ was performed at the Krishna Mutt as well as at temples in Sagri, Tangodu and Harithodu on Thursday on the occasion of Champa Shashti.

As many as 19 devotees performed the ‘Made Snana’ around the Subrahmanya shrine in the Sri Krishna Mutt complex.

However, 11 devotees performed ‘Ede Snana’ ritual in the Subrahmanya temple managed by Pejawar Mutt at Muchlukodu here. ‘Made Snana’ involves devotees rolling over the leftovers on plantain leaves on which Brahmins have consumed their meals.

Barring a couple of devotees, the rest of those who performed the ritual here were Brahmins. Madhvesh Acharya, mutt scholar, told presspersons that the Subrahmanya shrine was built by seer Sri Vadiraja 500 years ago. The practice of ‘Made Snana’ too had started since then, he said.

“Devotees who have taken a vow or offered a seva (service) usually roll over the plantain leaves. They perform ‘Made Snana’ out of their own choice. They do it on the fulfilment of the vow or for other benefits,” he said.

Shankar Bhat, who works at the Sri Krishna Mutt, was one of those who performed ‘Made Snana’.

“I performed the ritual as a service… I have been performing it for the last two years,” he said. K. Srinivas Acharya, a shopkeeper at Kinnimulki, said he had been doing ‘Made Snana’ for the last 10 to 12 years.

Meanwhile, 11 devotees performed ‘Ede Snana’ which involved rolling over plantain leaves that contained ‘prasada’ offered to the deity, at the Subrahmanya temple at Muchlukodu.

Vishwesh Acharya, a devotee who has been coming to the temple for the festival for last 10 years, said the ritual of ‘Ede Snana’ had replaced “Made Snana’ from two years.

“It is Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt who had suggested ‘Ede Snana’ in the place of ‘Made Snana’. We will follow the seer’s directions,” he said.

Meanwhile, R Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, said that he would seek a report from the Superintendent of Police and the Udupi tahsildar on ‘Made Snana’ being performed at the Subrahmanya shrine at Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple complex here on Thursday.

Asked if the existing stay order on performance of ‘Made Snana’ was limited to the Kukke Subrahmanya temple or applicable across the State, Dr. Vishal said, “It will have to be legally examined.”

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
