Udupi, Apr 8: Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Om Prakash said on Wednesday that acts of “moral policing” in the coastal districts would be dealt with sternly.
Addressing presspersons at the headquarters of the Coastal Security Police at Malpe here, Mr. Prakash said that there would be zero tolerance towards incidents of “moral policing” so that the message went across to miscreants that they could not take law into their own hands.
On naxalite activities in the Western Ghats, he said that naxalite activities were under control in the State. The Anti-Naxalite Force (ANF) and the local police had been competent in dealing with the issue, especially when compared to the neighbouring States, he said.
To a query, Mr. Prakash said that the police were giving priority to women’s security in the State.
Training and sensitisation programmes had been held for police personnel on this issue. They were also being trained in using the new laws concerning harassment and other cases, he said.
On the misuse of social media for spreading rumours and false news, he said that the police was keeping a watch on the data being spread through social media and trying to analyse it.
He said the police had recruited over 8,000 new persons for various posts. These new recruits were undergoing training. Shortage of personnel in the police department was not a new thing, but vacant posts were getting filled, he said.
He had visited Mangaluru, Karkala and now Udupi to familiarise himself with the working of the police here.
He wanted to know about their achievements, problems and requirements, Mr. Prakash said.
Mr. Prakash also gave away certificates and cash prizes to seven fishermen from Uttara Kannada district – Vasudev Harikantra, Vishwanath Harikantra, Yadav Mogera, Rajesh Harikantra, Vishnu Harikantra, Premanand Harikantra and Somayya Harikantra – for rescuing a naval officer who had fallen into the sea out of a Dornier aircraft.
The aircraft had met with an accident on the border of Karnataka and Goa on March 24.
Amar Kumar Pandey, ADGP (Internal Security), Pratap Reddy, IGP (Internal Security), A.N.S. Murthy, IGP (ANF operations), were present.
