Mangalore, May 5: As polling across the state came to a close on Sunday, the day ended without any major incidents or disruptions in the coastal district of Udupi. The atmosphere was largely peaceful throughout the five constituencies of the district.
According to sources, the district recorded a voter turnout of 76.96 percent as the voting ended at 6 p.m.
"Polling is on in a peaceful manner across the district and over 40 percent voting has taken place by 1.p.m" said a source. Maximum turnout of 45% recorded in Udupi Assembly constituency in the district, while Kaup constituency recorded lowest turnout of 38%. Karkala, Kundapur and Baindoor constituencies also have recorded more than 40 percent of turnout.
With the Election Commission (EC) advancing commencement of polling by an hour to 7 a.m., hundreds of voters made a beeline to booths in many of 1,038 polling stations in 668 locations spread out in the district to cast their vote through electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Pejawar Mutt pontiff Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji cast his vote at North School at around 8 a.m.
Former BJP MLA Halady Srinivas Shetty, who is contesting as independent candidate from Kundapur, exercised his franchise. Senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes exercised his franchise at Vivekananda school in Ajjarkad. Kundapur BJP candidate Kishore Kumar cast his vote at UBMC School.
