Udupi, Apr 8: A 25-year-old civic labourer died after inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a manhole at M-Kodi near Kasaba village in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on Saturday.
The deceased is Sandeep, a Dalit youth from Thekatte. His mother was a former Thekatte gram panchayat member. The incident happened when Sandeep and few others were engaged for cleaning work by one Abdul Khader Geelani as there was a function at his house on Sunday.
Sandeep was manually cleaning a manhole, while the other labourers were outside the manhole working on other cleaning aspects. He suddenly slipped and fell into the pit.
After some time, the other labourers, who observed that the victim did not come outside, were worried and immediately pulled him out and took him to the hospital. However, he succumbed to death on the way to the hospital.
The police have charged the employer under Manual Scavenging Act, SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and IPC Section 304 (A) for negligence. Dalit leaders in Thekatte have urged for stringent action against Geelani. They also demanded that adequate compensation should be given to the victim's family.
