Udupi, Aug 11: A 28-year-old man climbed a mobile phone tower and threatened to commit suicide if his owner did not pay him the remaining salary at Vandse village near Kollur in Kundapur taluk on Tuesday. Three personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services finally managed to bring him down after about four hours.

According to the Kollur police, the man, Biju, hailed from Kollam in Kerala. He was working in affirm owned by Shashidar. The firm manufactured rings for wells.
Biju climbed the 350-ft tall tower in Vandse around 9.30 a.m. and threatened to commit suicide if his owner did not pay him his remaining salary. This was noticed by the people in the village, who called the Fire and Emergency Services in Kundapur at 10.50 a.m. A large number of people gathered at the spot.
Three personnel of the department, who reached the spot at 11.20 a.m., then climbed the tower and tried to pacify him. They also gave him water and bananas, atop the tower.
Meanwhile, Mr. Shashidhar also reached the spot and promised to pay him the remaining dues as early as possible and urged him to get off the tower. Finally, Biju relented. Since he had threatened suicide, the Fire and Emergency Services personnel tied him up with a rope and brought him down at around 1.30 p.m. Since Biju was exhausted, he was taken to the Primary Health Centre at Vandse for treatment.
The police said that Biju had had a drink or two before climbing the tower. “While he managed to climb the tower, he did not know how to get off it,” said Jayanth, Sub-Inspector of Police, Kollur Police Station.
“Biju claimed that Mr. Shashidhar owes him Rs. 40,000. He was upset at not getting the pending salary. He was working with Mr. Shashidhar for quite some time. Biju lives in a small room at Kundabarandangady village near Vandse,” Mr. Jayanth said.
