Udupi, Jul 15: A man who had ordered a cell phone from an online portal opened the package to find a stone, and decided to file a case as the courier company that despatched the parcel disowned responsibility. This is the third incident of a stone being received by a customer in recent months in Udupi.
Dr Savio D'Souza, a resident of Shankerapura village in Udupi taluk, who works at Kasturba Medical College, had ordered a cell phone online recently.
Dr D’Souza said that he had a placed a pre-paid order on Snapdeal for a Micromax Canvas Hotknot A99 8 GB phone worth Rs 6,350. “On Tuesday, a delivery boy came with the package. When I opened the parcel, I found a stone instead of a mobile phone.”
The parcel was delivered by FedEx courier as Snapdeal has no office in Udupi. When contacted, the courier company told the customer that their responsibility was only to deliver the parcel and they did not scan it before receiving.
"Now, I have no option but to report the matter to police and I filed a complaint against," said Dr D’Souza.
In an earlier incident on March 12, a photographer Sharat Kumar from Malpe, had ordered a Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera worth Rs. 50,990 from the same e-retailer and got a stone incident.
On April 2, Rajesh Nayak, a cashier in a bakery, who had ordered a mobile telephone batter charger (power bank) costing Rs. 1,499 from an e-retailer received a parcel containing a stone.
In both the cases the customers had placed order under the ‘cash on delivery’ option and courier service had returned the entire amount even though it had disowned responsibility. However, this time the customer had placed order under pre-paid option.
