Udupi, Mar 25: The BJP-led Karnataka government which is pressing for the anti-cow slaughter bill to come into effect has not retained even a single meadow in the state, all of which have been claimed by high-rise buildings. This has resulted in farmers losing their agricultural lands to foreign companies, and being made to work as slaves, said national vice-president of Welfare Party of India (WPI) Dr B T Lalitha Nayak.
Speaking at the launching ceremony of Udupi unit of Welfare Party of India at the Town Hall here on Sunday, she said that the Congress and BJP were on the verge of selling our country to foreign companies. People have had enough of these ill-conditioned political parties, which are bent on dividing the people on the basis of religion. Religion should become a means of uniting people, not dividing them. That which divides the society cannot be called a religion, she declared.
Further, she said that today, people did not enjoy fundamental rights such as freedom to live and practice the religion of their choice. People do not even know the rights they are entitled to. In such a situation, one ought to work towards spreading awareness among people about their fundamental duties. This requires the need for a new political party, she said, adding that it was the responsibility of the government to provide homes, clean drinking water and employment to people.
It is not the government's duty to donate millions of rupees to religious institutions. An administration free from corruption, and fair elections in the country should be our main aim, said Dr Nayak.
WPI state president Akbar Ali presided over the programme. State general secretary Mohammed Ibrahim, state minority wing president Laiju Sebastian, vice president of Kasaragod district unit Ravindra Brahmeshwar participated in the event.
Udupi district vice president Dinakar Uchila, secretary Asif G D, Dakshina Kannada district president Zahid Hussain, Mohammed and others were present.
