Udupi, Mar 27: A youth slashed his wrists in a suicide attempt in Manipal on Tuesday. He was admitted to a private hospital. There are conflicting versions of why he attempted suicide.

Laxman Nimbargi, Superintendent of Police, said Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Bolje, Udyavar, was riding his motorcycle and had assaulted a couple travelling in a car close to an ATM of State Bank of India near Manipal around 12.20 p.m. on March 25. The entire episode was captured in the CCTV camera at the ATM.
After the man travelling in the car brought the matter to the notice of the police, Kumar was called to the Manipal police station on Tuesday, where the police procured a bond from him. Later, Kumar went to his house and slashed his wrists because he felt humiliated, Mr. Nimbargi said.
However, Kumar said he had been beaten by two police constables, who had also used abusive language towards him, at the police station. Since he could not bear it, he attempted suicide, he said.
