Mangaluru, Mar 24: The countdown has begun to the historic Urs at the renowned Hazrat Sayyid Muhammad Shareeful Madani Darga at Ullal, scheduled to be held this year from April 2 to 26 this year. Fervent preparations are underway for the much-awaited Urs that will commence with a grand inauguration next month.

The number of believers and devotees to the Ullal Darga Urs held once in five years has been increasing. With around 30 lakh believers participating in the previous Urs, this time around 35 lakh devotees are expected to visit the Darga during the ritual.

During the previous time, approximately 2 lakh persons had participated in the rice distribution programme held on the last day of the Urs. It is estimated that this year, around 2.5 lakh people will be present for the rice distribution programme on April 26.

For the first time, the Urs will be held under the guidance of new Khazi Fazal Koyamma Thangal, son of Tajul Ulama Assyyid Abdurrahman Bukhari.

In the past not much security was seen during the Urs. However, this time, with the absolute necessity for a large number of security forces, over a thousand security personnel including Karnataka State Reserve Police and those from neighbouring districts will be deployed as part of security arrangements along with 200 CCTV cameras, informed Mangaluru Police Commissioner S Murugan.

Vice president of Ullal dargah committee Ashraf Ahmed R said that on the occasion of the 20th Urs celebrations, around 20 types of special programmes, awards, felicitations for achievers and other programmes would be held for the first time. For the smooth organisation of the Urs, people and political leaders from all religions are cooperating in the preparations, he said.

500 goats

On the last day of the Urs, as customary, ghee rice and mutton will be served to people visiting the Darga, for which goats sent from believers throughout the country will be used. A total of 10.5 tons will be required to serve the visitors. Since the previous time, around 500 goats had been received from all over the country, this time over 500 goats were expected as part of the ‘vow’ of the devotees. Already 50 goats had been received by the Darga, he said.

Darga committee president U S Hamza said that during the upcoming Urs, programmes would be held more during the daytime than during night hours.

Renowned throughout the country, thousands of devotees and believers are expected to attend the Urs next month. On April 3, an international-level convention is scheduled to be held, in which the Governor of Karnataka is expected to participate.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
