Bengaluru, Jun 12: Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader said the State government is keen on prohibiting tobacco sales within 500 metres of schools and other educational institutions, to stop children below 18 years of age from accessing tobacco products.

Speaking after inaugurating a regional workshop on National Tobacco Prevention organised by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the City on Thursday, he said the current rules prohibit sales within 100 metres of schools under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Mr. Khader, said: “If we get complaints from anyone regarding sale within the prohibited area, we will initiate stringent action against the shopkeepers.”
Over 35 participants from 12 States at the workshop, discussed challenges in the implementation of COTPA Act and rules on the first day, will deliberate on developing guidelines for tobacco-free cities on Friday.
Speaking on Yoga Day controversy, he said yoga was just a form of exercise and it should not be given a political or religious twist. “The State had no objection to the Union government’s decision to observe Yoga Day,” he said.
“The report given by a private laboratory in Bengaluru indicates that Maggi noodles samples contain 0.053 grams of MSG (mono sodium glutamate). To get it confirmed, we have written to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru. In case it refuses to test the samples, we will approach the laboratory in West Bengal,” he said.
Khader said the government had requested the CFTRI to submit its report at the earliest in the interest of the public.
