The violation came to light on the eve of May 5 Assembly election, when Mangalore inspector G T Nayak along with others inspecting vehicles near Bejai. They found a Tavera, bearing registration number KA 19 C 5279, carrying pamphlets criticizing Mangalore South Congress candidate J R Lobo.
The pamphlets, which were printed in the name of Hanumanth Kamath of Nagarika Hitarakshana Samiti, were meant for distribution in Mangalore South constituency hours before the polls.
Police have taken Tavera driver and a BJP member identified as Satish Prabhu who was in the vehicle in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, a group of supporters of J R Lobo gathered in front of Mangalore East Police Station demanding stringent action against poll code violation. Chaos erupted when a few BJP workers also gathered in front of the station. However, police managed to disperse the mob through warning. A case has been registered.
