Mangalore, Oct 13: Members of Vishwa Hindu Parishat and Bajarang Dal staged a demonstration in front of DC office in Mangalore on Monday against Kavoor SI Umesh for allegedly assaulting their fellow member, a murder accused.
Charan, a resident of Moodushedde had alleged that he was beaten up by the SI Umesh after taking him to police station.
Addressing the protestors, BJP leader Mohan Bhandary said if at all Charan was involved in criminal activities, there was a court to decide the punishment. œPolice have no right to assault innocent people, he said.
œAll police are not bad. There are good police officers too. But the SI has made the entire police force hang heads in shame. He should be suspended within 24 hours, he warned.
Jagadish Shenava, VHP leader said that police take no action if the offenders are Muslims. œDifferent laws for Hindus and Muslims. Hindus are discriminated in Karnataka, he said.
He urged criminal action against the Sub Inspector.
The protestors also submitted a memorandum to city police commissioner.
˜Murder accused'
According to Kavoor Sub-Inspector Umesh, Charan, a rowdy-sheeter is one of the accused in Pitty Nagesh murder case. He was also involved in attempt to murder case, selling Ganja. His name was registered under rowdy-sheeters' list. œAccording law, Charan has to come police station daily and sign on ledger. But he refused to come daily. An FIR has been filed against him, said the SI.
