Mangalore, Sep 30: Due to the growing haughtiness of persons behind vigilante attacks in Mangalore, a youth from a poor family has been rendered incapacitated and is close to losing his life.

Even after a month after a group of pro-Hindutva activists brutally attacked and thrashed three youth near Pumpwell while they were transporting cattle, the youth who bore the brunt of the attack is still in comatose and undergoing treatment at a hospital.

On August 24, a group of miscreants waylaid three youth transporting cattle near Pumpwell and mercilessly attacked them with batons and stones, leaving them in a critical state.

One of the youth, Abdul Sameer from Kasargod, suffered extensive injuries all over his body and was immediately rushed to the intensive care unit of the hospital. The attack had been so brutal that he had lost consciousness during the attack.

It is said that following the attack, he had been hanging between life and death for about 12 days, before slipping away into coma. According to medical sources, he is still in a state of comatose in the hospital and is no closer to recovering.

32-year-old Abdul had earlier been earning his livelihood as an auto-rickshaw driver. Married with five small children at home, he had procured a loan from the bank and purchased a Tata Xenon to transport fish for a living. With a small income, he used to provide for his family and children.

On the fateful day, Abdul Sameer was transporting cattle in a vehicle after purchasing them from a cattle trader and was plying towards Uppinangady along with Fayaz and Shoukath.

Following the attack, his family is struggling to pay the hospital and medical bills. The family has already pawned their jewellery and given Rs 1.30 lakh to the hospital for Abdul's treatment. Now, they are in dire need of an additional Rs 1.20 lakh to pay the hospital fees.

Abdul's 60-year-old father laments the condition of his son and is distraught over the mounting expenses. Hailing from a poor background, the family has no source of income and is desperately seeking funds for the treatment and recovery of Abdul.

Donors willing to donate money for the treatment of Abdul Sameer can contact 09686259318 for help.

Meanwhile, the family has alleged that constable Damodar from Mangalore rural police station had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 from them during the registration of the case in connection with the attack on Abdul. Although Abdul's father conveyed that they had no much funds available, the constable had allegedly insisted on a bribe of Rs 5,000 for the recovery of the vehicle seized by the police.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
