Mangaluru, May 17: Vittala Malekudya, who is facing charges of being a maoist-sympathiser has filed his nominations for gram panchayath election, from Kuthloor second ward in Naravi gram panchayath in Belthangady Taluk on Saturday.
The 25-year-old youth, who holds a post gradation degree in mass communication and journalism, is the co convener of Adivasi Hakkugala Samanvaya Samiti. He is also the president of Belthangady taluk unit of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).
On Saturday, along with the workers of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Vittala filed the nomination at about 11.45 p.m.
Speaking after filing nominations, he said he will consider Gram Panchayath polls as a challenge. "By filling false chargesheet against me, the government is trying to take away my right to life. I am contesting the election to take up development programmes and in protest against the eviction of the forest dwellers by the government and atrocity on tribals."
Vittala and his father Lingappa Malekudiya had been arrested by the police on March 3, 2012 from their house in Belthangady taluk on the charge of having links with Maoists.
After his release, Vittala managed to complete his post-graduation in 2013-14. The police filed the charge sheet on January 30, 2015. The court has held its first hearing of the charges.
