Mangaluru, Feb 4: Vittala Malekudiya, a tribal youth who is facing charges for allegedly being a naxal sympathizer, is contesting the zilla panchayat election this time as a Communist Party of India (Marxists) candidate.

On Wednesday, accompanied by local leaders of CPI(M), Mr. Malekudiya filed his nomination papers for Dharmasthala Zilla Panchayat constituency.
A postgraduate in Journalism and Mass Communication, he had contested last Gram Panchayat election from Naravi in Belthangady taluk and faced defeat. He managed to secure only 30 votes.
An alumnus of Mangalore University Mr. Malekudiya, along with his father Linganna Malekudiya, was arrested by the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) on March 3, 2012 for allegedly supporting naxals.
After 125 days of judicial custody, Belthanday JMFC court had granted father and son bail on the grounds that the police had failed to file chargesheet against the duo even after the stipulated 90 days. However, the police had filed chargesheet against them later. Vittala and Linganna were charged under sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Section 121 of the IPC.
Dharmastala constituency was represented by BJP member Dhanalaxmi Janardhan. Election will be held for Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat and five taluk panchayats in the district on February 20. There are 36 constituencies in Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, where BJP had majority.
