Mangalore, May 19: Declining to take the responsibility of the defeat of Congress candidate B Janardhan Poojary in Dakshina Kannada constituency upon himself, Minister for Forests, Environment and Ecology B Ramanath Rai said that anti-incumbency factor across the country was the reason for the overwhelming defeat of Congress in the parliamentary elections.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said that it was natural for anti-incumbency to prevail after the governance of a particular government for 10 years. Congress party has tasted both victory and defeat in the country previously, without giving up its secular stand. Congress might have lost in the parliamentary elections as it did not promote its achievements successfully, he said, adding that the party members would respect the public opinion.
He said that although Congress had introduced some of the best schemes and programmes, the party lost because of the anti-incumbency wave and also the negative campaign against it.
He also said that the party leaders were pained over the defeat of a person like Janardhan Poojary. “However, there is no question of stepping down from the post of the district president because of the defeat. Henceforth, we will closely watch the BJP government and the extent to which it will deliver the promises made during the elections,” he said.
Dismissing the allegation that the local Congress MLAs in the district did not work for the party candidate, Mr Rai said that all the Congress leaders and MLAs had worked in unison with the party workers during campaigning.
He said that the district unit of the party would not consider the election verdict as rejection of the party by the voters. Winning and losing are two sides of the same coin and in these elections, the party lost. The Karnataka state government will implement more schemes than the Gujarat government, he added.
