Bengaluru, Nov 14: BJP leader and Union Urban Development Minister M?Venkaiah Naidu on Friday took exception to the State government organising the Tipu Sultan Jayanti recently and sought to know the immediate reason for organising the event.
On the renaming of Bengaluru international airport, raised by writer Girish Karnad, he said it was uncalled for and raked up unnecessarily. Kempegowda is one of the popular leaders of Karnataka.
Elsewhere in the City, JD(S) national president and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda also condemned the remarks made by Karnad.
Gowda said Tipu Jayanti celebrations had led to several clashes across the State and added that the BJP too should be equally blamed for the incident. “The State committed the first mistake by holding the Jayanti. Using this, the BJP is fuelling riots. Both the BJP and the Congress are responsible for the tense situation prevailing in the State,” he said.
Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Jagadish Shettar pinned the blame for the clashes and the subsequent deaths entirely on the State government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He demanded that Siddaramaiah resign immediately, as he was trying to “divert” the attention of the people from his government’s failures by trying to rake up controversial issues.
He said Siddaramaiah should have stopped Karnad from making controversial remarks. Also, though there was prima facie evidence that VHP leader Kuttappa had been bludgeoned to death. Siddaramaiah had, however, brushed the matter aside by stating that it was an accidental death.
