Mysuru, Dec 25: Dubbing the Bill to amend the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Act by the State government as discrimination against the Hindus, Pejawar Mutt pontiff Vishwesha Tirtha Swami said that there should be a uniform law governing all religious institutions.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, the seer said cases of corruption against mutts could be investigated as per law, but it was discriminatory to take a uniform view towards all mutts while keeping Christian and Muslim institutions out of its purview.
He said that there should be a uniform law governing all religious institutions. The seer said though the government accuses communal forces of dividing society, it has conceived a law targeting Hindu religious institutions. He questioned whether it did not amount to creating a rift in society.
The seer said it was not the government's job to control or administer the mutts or religious institutions and if it did so, then it was an affront on the freedom of religion.
Referring to the ongoing controversy over religious conversion, the seer said secular forces keep mum when Hindus are converted, but raise a hue and cry when there is conversion to Hinduism.
He supported an Anti-Conversion Bill applicable to all religions.
The seer also expressed his regret over the government's decision to withdraw the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection Bill, 2010.
The Bill was introduced by the BJP government when in power in the State and prescribed punishment for those violating the provisions of the law, which banned cow slaughter.
œThe government's decision to withdraw the Bill is most degrading and has hurt me, he said.
