Mangalore, Sep 8: People in Sullia taluk have been living in fear after elephant attacks recently surfaced in Mandekoli in the taluk. Many wild elephants have been sighted in the villages in the last few days.
During operations planned by the villagers to drive the herd of elephants to the thick forests, the villagers themselves were chased back by the elephants on Sunday.
The herd of jumbos that has entered into the agricultural plantations in Akkippady, Kalladka and Peraje in Mandekoli village area, has caused immense damage to the crops in the estates. The elephants have camped in the forests surrounding the agricultural fields posing a perpetual danger to the crops.
Last Saturday, the pack of jumbos entered the plantations of Radhakrishna Hebbar and Vasanth and destroyed the plants. Close to 250 banana and 75 arecanut trees were damaged in the ordeal.
Hence, the forest department officials and the locals tried to conduct an operation to drive the herd deep into the forests. However, this attempt was unsuccessful as the elephants themselves managed to chase the people away.
The farmers say that they were tired of the jumbo menace which caused extensive damage to the crops.
The elephants broke the fences outlining the plantations and also swam in the two lakes in the plantations on Saturday. This has caused the lakes to become marshy.
Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim and senior officials from the forest department visited the spot and conducted inspection.
