Mangaluru, Mar 9: A wild elephant trampled a labourer to death and injured two of his colleagues at Kombaru village in Subramanya Range Forest Division in Dakshina Kannada district two days ago.
The deceased and injured were 15 labourers from Tamil Nadu employed for constructing a railway bridge on the Subramanya- Mangaluru Railway line.
While 12 had left the site to attend a function in their native place, Ranjit (48), Lakshman (40), and Shanmuga (40), stayed in a makeshift shed at the work place.
The police said that unable to bear the heat inside, all the three slept outside the shed located in the elephant corridor.
Shanmuga heard the sound of an elephant coming towards the shed and got up. He tried waking up his two colleagues. While Shanmuga and Lakshman escaped with injury, Ranjit got trampled by the elephant.
The Kadaba police have registered a case of unnatural death. Ranjit was a resident of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, the police said.
