Chikkaballapur, Mar 10: Telugu megastar and union minister for tourism Chiranjeevi is likely to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from the parliamentary constituency of Chikballapur instead of sitting MP M Veerappa Moily.
Owing to its proximity to Andhra Pradesh border, Chikkaballapur district has a large number of Telugu speakers, which will be an advantage for Chiranjeevi.
The opposition BJP has already a local strongman and former state minister B N Bachche Gowda from Chikkaballapur, while JD(S) is likely to field former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy 's wife Anitha Kumaraswamy from the same seat.
In 2009, the win from this constituency was easy for Moily as both the opposition parties BJP and JD(S) had not fielded strong contestants. This time however, sources in the Congress state committee claim that Moily is hesitant in taking on very strong opponents.
As Chiranjeevi hails from the Balija community, the Congress is banking on the votes of the community members in view of the presence of large number of Balija voters in Chikkaballapur.
When the Congress high command released its first list of candidates on Saturday, it had the names of all sitting MPs from Karnataka except Moily 's.
Meanwhile, several senior Congress leaders are backing the candidature of former minister V Muniyappa. Srinivas Murthy, son-in-law of liquor baron D K Audikeshavalu, ophthalmologist from London Dr Madhu Seethappa and local Congressman M Mune Gowda are also among the aspirants.
However, Moily supporters are still confident that their leader's name will figure in the second list, which is supposed to be announced in a day or two. Vokkaligas, Balijas, Dalits and backward classes are dominant in the constituency.
