Mangaluru, May 8: The relatives of a woman, who died a few days after delivering a baby, due to alleged negligence by the doctors staged a protest in front of Government Lady Goschen Hospital in the city on Friday.
Poovakka (32), a resident of Ajjavara village, Sullia, died in District Wenlock Hospital, where she was shifted following the alleged negligence at Lady Goschen Hospital.
Amidst this development, Shakuntala, the Medical Superintendent of Government Lady Goschen Hospital was relieved from her position following directions from U T Khader, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
According to a communiqué from the Information and Public Relations Department, the action has been taken on the ground of dereliction of duty. Shakuntala was demoted and transferred to Wenlock Hospital. The Minister has also ordered an inquiry into the alleged dereliction, the communiqué said.
Poovamma had delivered of a baby on April 21 at Lady Goschen Hospital. However, she developed health complications on May 6 and was referred to Lady Goschen Hospital again.
In a complaint to the Bunder Police, the woman’s husband, Ganesh, stated that Poovamma, who had swelling in her legs, was not properly treated and instead, was given only hot water massage. She was then shifted to Wenlock Hospital, where she breathed her last.
The exact cause of the death is yet to be made public. The protesters demanded action against the doctor concerned. MLA J.R. Lobo met the protesters. Bunder police have registered a case. Investigation is on.
