Mangalore, Sep 28: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said here that women priests would be appointed at select endowment temples on a trial basis with an intention of ending gender inequality in temples.
He was responding to the request made by former union minister B Janardhan Poojary to appoint women priests in endowment temples, after inaugurating Mangalore Dasara at Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple on Saturday.
œI hope we will not face any opposition to the initiative, he added.
Poojary made a plea before the chief minister to begin a revolution in the State by allowing women to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the endowment temples and allow them to perform prayers, and thus put an end to gender inequality in temples.Poojary made the request referring to the example of Gokarnanatheshwara temple, where two women priests were appointed by the temple management a year ago.
